Dukinfield Cricket Club are well underway in their preparation for their upcoming season in the Greater Manchester League.

After steady progression for the 1st XI in Division 1 over the last two seasons the Higher King Street outfit are confident they can make a real push for the Premier League this year. The 2nd XI will once again be competing in Division 3 against a number of first teams at a good standard.

Boosted by the return of Sri Lankan Overseas Professional Yohan De Silva for a third term and the signing of South African Overseas Amateur Charlie Dowling, Jonathan Gascoigne’s men will be looking to hit the ground running.

“We’ve got a strong squad of players but like most teams do struggle when it comes to holiday season. If everyone is available who says we can’t get in to one of the promotion spots. Last year we beat Heywood twice, Edgworth and Woodhouses who are all in the Prem this season. With a bit more consistency that could be us.”

After the demise of the Pennine Cricket League Dukinfield find themselves in Division 1B with local sides Glodwick, Saddleworth and Moorside and renew old rivalries with former Lancashire County League outfits Glossop, Stand and Thornham.

“It should be good to play against these sides from the former Saddleworth League. They are in relatively close proximity to us so should help build up a bit of rivalry and be easier to socialise with the opposition after a game. One’s thing for sure the standard of cricket will be very strong once again.”

It’s not just on the pitch where Dukinfield have been making inroads.

The club now has a formal ground naming rights deal with Thorneycroft Solicitors. The company based in Macclesfield have agreed to act as ground sponsor for the next two seasons with the club’s Higher King Street base now being known as the “Thorneycroft Oval”.

Club spokesman Lewis Riley said: “We rely on the help of local companies to ensure we can function each year. In return for sponsorship we actively promote our sponsors on our Facebook and Twitter pages to over 1000 followers.”

“Without the generosity of Thorneycrofts and new sponsors Robert’s Opticians based on King Street, Dukinfield and Tokies Takeaway on Mottram Road in Stalybridge, as well as our retuning sponsors, the day to day running of the club would be hell of a lot harder. The sponsorship allows us to continue to provide a safe, fun and interactive environment for the youngsters of Dukinfield and the surrounding area to come and learn new skills and enjoy team sport. We run teams from under 9’s through to u15’s and are always on the lookout for new players. All our coaches are fully qualified and CRB checked. If there are any local companies out there who could see a benefit to using the club social media as a platform to promote their services do get in touch.”

“We are also on the lookout for senior players of 1st and 2nd XI quality. A couple of guys have retired at the end of last season so we have opportunities for people to come in and play straight away for our senior sides. Maybe you’re not getting an opportunity at your current club or have recently moved to the Tameside area – if that’s you get in touch.”
