Kendal Town 1-0 Glossop North End

Kendal is renowned for its sweet tasting mint cake, but Glossop returned to Derbyshire with a sour taste in their mouth following a 1-0 defeat in the Lake District.

Brad Carroll’s goal in the 16th minute proved to be the difference in a rather uneventful game on a beautiful day in the Lake District.

Although both sides rarely threatened in the early stages, when chances did arise Kendal found Glossop ‘keeper Russ Saunders in inspired mood. The shot stopper made two saves in quick succession to deny Sam Staunton-Turner and Carroll.

Saunders was soon beaten however, as Gareth Arnison’s chipped pass fell into the path of Carroll whose angled shot nestled into the bottom left corner.

At the other end of the pitch, Kendal ‘keeper Matthew Johnson made two fine saves to keep his side in front. Jack Higgs was denied by a brilliant stop before Jack Bishop’s effort was palmed away at the near post.

The Mintcakes looked to have doubled their lead but an eagle eyed linesman ruled out Ric Seear’s effort for offside.

Glossop have suffered a disappointing end to the season, but the form of Courtney Meppen-Walter has given Hillmen fans something to smile about. The former Stockport County man almost drew his side level in the opening stages of the second half with a free kick, before his powerful header was cleared away by the Kendal defence.

Chances were few and far between from this point, although Carroll did have another opportunity to score before the final whistle, but his effort went well over the bar from close range.
