This weekend saw Oldham Hockey Club hosting a fundraiser: An evening with Olympic gold-medalist Kate Richardson-Walsh. The evening, organised by club member Ashleigh Wilson and her husband Adam Wilson, was a massive success and has raised over £3000 for the club. The generosity shown by those who attended the event and those who donated raffle and auction prizes is completely overwhelming, and the club are incredibly grateful for all the support.

Oldham 1s faced UoM 1s in a match that would secure survival for Oldham. It was a shaky start from the home team, but after 15 minutes it became more fluent. Oldham looked dangerous on the break every time, and scored 2 deserved goals. The Uni team came back strong and, after Oldham repeatedly losing possession, scored past Emma Burns despite a strong performance in goal.

The second half was on a knife edge and Oldham were under pressure from the off. Despite strong defending from Amy Broadbent and Chidi Onuoha, Oldham conceded an equaliser. Oldham lost the ball several times and needed to keep possession but Karen Rowley on her comeback scored for the second time to secure the points. Oldham should now be safe and look forward to two further home games to finish the season.

Oldham’s second XI experienced their first loss of the season on Saturday. After a 4-0 win over the University side just a few weeks ago, Oldham were not expecting the strength shown by the opposition. Although Oldham showed some good episodes of play, they were not showing their usual skill and teamwork, and were unable to penetrate the manchester back line. UoM were fast on the break, and scored their first goal by catching the defence off-guard. A second goal came for Uni from a penalty flick, and although Oldham were determined to try to pull it back, it was not meant to be, and Uni secured their win with a third. Oldham hold their heads high, as they have had a fantastic season so far, and vow to return their great form to win their 2 remaining games, to prepare for promotion next season.

Oldham Ladies 3rd XI put in a strong team performance in arctic conditions in their 2:30pm push back on Saturday. In desperate need of a win (and some thermals) Oldham came out fighting. Katie Hargreaves (voted player of the match) ran rings round the opposition who just couldn’t keep up with her speedy play down the right wing; working with Hayley Jackson and Rachel Wilson, Manchester Uni just couldn’t hold back Oldham’s attack. Collective hard work and determination led to goals from Oldham’s rising star Regan Lord, Vice Captain Emily Vynne and Captain Karen Lord. A 3-0 win for Oldham puts them 5th in the league with one game left to play.
