Stalybridge Carnival has been ‘saved’ as a community event and will go ahead this year as planned.

A new committee has been created to organise the hugely popular parade and festival.

The news was officially revealed at the latest Stalybridge Town Council meeting and comes after the sad death of Nigel Hobson at the end of last year who was the driving force behind the carnival along with the entire Hobson family.

Nigel had taken up the mantle of running the event following the death of his father David back in 2014.

Joyce, Phil and Andrew Hobson all attended the meeting to announce the news to appreciative applause from residents and councillors attending the meeting.

An emotional Joyce explained that, after her son Nigel’s sad death the family would not be able to continue organising the carnival.

The family have been involved in the event for the last 42 years, and the hand over truly marked the end of an era.

Joyce personally thanked councillors Jan Jackson and David Sweeton in assisting in the creation of the new committee, ensuring the carnival would continue.

Andrew and Phil explained the family would also be offering their full support to the new committee to provide any assistance needed.

Ian Cochrane becomes the new organising secretary.

Members of the community are invited to get involved with the organising of this year’s event – with help especially needed with organising the Carnival Queens element. Someone who could offer website skills is also required to assist.

The committee will be meeting at 8pm on March 19 at Stalybridge Labour Club and everyone is welcome to go along if they believe they can help in any way.

• Tune into Tameside Radio 103.6FM for a special edition of the Reporter Show tonight at 7pm when we speak exclusively to the Hobson family, as they mark the end of an era and share special memories of carnivals past in a fitting tribute to David and Nigel.
