Former Audenshaw School pupil, Niall Maher has signed for National League outfit FC Halifax Town.

The 22-year-old defender started his career at Bolton Wanderers, alongside fellow pupil and Nottingham Forest striker Zach Clough, before joining Bury for the 2016-17 season.

Finding game time hard to come by, Maher joined League of Ireland Premier Division side Galway United in August 2017, before moving to AFC Telford United in February 2018.

Maher has since attracted the attention of Halifax boss Jamie Fullarton and joined the Shaymen ahead of Saturday’s trip to Woking.

Of the signing, Fullarton told Halifax’s official website:: “Niall is a great addition to the squad. He has versatility and understands the environment that he is coming into having worked under me before.

“He has also shown through the physical aspect that he can play men’s football having played done so at Championship level, even at a young age.

“It gives us more scope and adds more to the squad, and variety to the squad and the fans can look forward to seeing him play.

“We are always proactive in always wanting to add to the squad, because we want competition for places and to counterbalance any suspensions or injuries that we have, so that it does not derail the momentum that we are trying to gather.”

Maher, who also spent a brief period on loan with Blackpool, said the opportunity to join the Shaymen was too good to turn down. He said: “When I was at Bolton in the Under 21s Jamie was my manager, so I know how much of a professional he is. Coming back to work with someone who you know and have a good understanding and relationship with was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.

“I’m coming into a club where I don’t really know anyone, other than Connor Oliver who I played with at Blackpool. To come in and already know the manager helps you to settle in more. I have a good understanding of that which stands me in good stead.”
