The Tameside School Games Basketball competition recently took place with 62 teams all vying for a spot in the Level 3 Greater Manchester School Games.

The heats took place at Droylsden Academy, Great Academy Ashton, St Thomas More and at Rayner Stephens High School. Students from each school and Tameside College supported the competition. 17 teams made it to the finals held at Great Academy Ashton, with a real spread of Tameside schools: Livingstone, St Josephs (Mossley), Canon Burrows, Oasis Broadoak (Ashton-Under-Lyne), Hollingworth, Dowson, Pinfold (Hyde), Fairfield Rd, Moorside, Greenside (Droyslden), Silver Springs (Stalybridge), Corrie and St John Fisher (Denton).

It was close in the finals with a real challenge for each school to finish top of their group. Finalists were Hollingworth, Livingstone, Moorside and St Josephs, with Hollingworth becoming Champions of Tameside for the second consecutive year. They will now represent their school and Tameside in the Greater Manchester School Games in March.

Hollingworth Primary will now receive free tickets to one of the Giants games at their home Trafford Sports dome.

David Kadiri said: “We are happy to see so many children playing our sport. Its fantastic to be invited to competitions like this and see grassroots sport in action. Schools are so important for giving pupils opportunity. We wouldn’t be where we are now without our teachers taking us to events like this.”

Emma Toone from Tameside School Sports Partnership, who organised the event, said: “Each year this competition builds in numbers. A massive well done to all the teams who took part and congratulations to Hollingworth primary who have won this event and represented Tameside twice now. An amazing achievement out of 62 teams.

“Thanks to all the leaders from Droylsden Academy, Great Academy Ashton, St Thomas More, Rayner Stephens and Tameside college for refeering and to Manchester Giants Basketball Club for the support with the competition and with the finals.”
