Droylsden 1-2 South Shields

The league leaders hung on for all three points as Droylsden finished the game the stronger team in this high quality match in difficult conditions

Ciaran Kilheeney’s 88th minute header though came too late as Droylsden fought to come back from two early first half goals.

South Shields had taken the lead as early as the second minute when a Briggs shot fell at the feet of Armstrong who made no mistake from six yards sliding the ball between Branagan’s legs.

Shields then went two up when the home team failed to clear a free kick and Morse headed home unmarked on twenty three minutes.

The Bloods should have got one back straight after half time when Liam Caddick cut inside only to slice his shot wide while Steve Hall saw his attempt just miss the wrong side of the post.

Jamie Frost came on for Dom Smith to create more within and immediately had an impact down the left hand side forcing Connell to punch his attempt.

But the visitors always looked dangerous on the break, substitute Pattison forcing a good save low to his right by Branagan.

While the Bloods played some good football in difficult conditions, the ball refused to run for their forwards until Kilheeney glanced in a Daly corner at the near post, but despite the referee adding five minutes of injury time, the home team could not force the equaliser.
