Gilcryst Cup quarter final

Avro 2-2 Rochdale Sacred Heart (Rochdale win 6-5 on penalties)

Avro’s season long unbeaten run was ended by Rochdale Sacred Heart in the Gilcryst Cup quarter final on Saturday.

James Hampson and Lee O’Brien’s outfit were looking to extend their unblemished run of form but were beaten 6-5 on penalties after the tie finished 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes.

The result leaves Rochdale just two victories away from retaining the cup.

Despite a goal threatened first half, with included numerous chances for each side, it took until the 78th minute for Avro to break the deadlock. Substitute Louis Potts darted forward and squared the ball to Chrissy Howell, who then passed to Lee O’Brien who converted from close range.

The lead lasted just one minute, however, as Rochdale equalised with a delicate chip over goalkeeper Karl Stone.

Despite the setback, Avro responded brilliantly and reasserted their lead just three minutes later. Howell and O’Brien linked up well together for a secomd time, and the latter finished with real conviction.

As the game entered its dying stages, Rochdale threw everything they had at Avro. The visitors’ efforts were rewarded in the 87th minute when Joe Shelmadine converted a rebound from close range.

Avro had a great opportunity to clinch victory in the final minute, but Howell’s rasping effort cannoned off the bar and away to safety.

With the score level at the end of 90 minutes, the game was taken to penalties, which Rochdale won 6-5.

Avro have the opportunity to return to winning ways when they return to Manchester Premier League action on Saturday against Springhead.
