Two men have been arrested in connection with three arson attacks in Tameside.

The first happened just before 12:20 am on Christmas Day, when a Seat Ibiza was set on fire on Clayton Street in Dukinfield.

Just 24 hours later, at 12:45am on Boxing Day, police were called to reports that a house on the same street was alight. Emergency services attended and found that two cars on the street were on fire, as well as the property.

One of the cars was the same Seat Ibiza that had been targeted the night before, while the other was a Seat Leon.

The third arson attack happened at around 1.40am on Thursday 18th January, at a house on Callington Close in Hyde.

The two offenders forced entry through the front of the house and set it on fire before running off.

Thankfully, the residents of the property weren’t home at the time and nobody was hurt in either of the three attacks, which are believed to be linked.

Following a joint investigation between Greater Manchester Police and the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, two men- aged 22 and 26- were arrested in Hyde yesterday, on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. They remain in custody for questioning.

Detective Sergeant Joe Harrop, of GMP’s Tameside borough, said: “We have followed several lines of enquiry since these shocking arson attacks and whilst we have arrested two people, our investigation does not stop here.

“Today’s arrests come as a result of the tireless work of GMP officers who are determined to find those responsible.

“I would still urge anyone with any information or anyone who saw anything suspicious around the time of the attacks to please get in touch.”

Anyone with any information should call police on 101 quoting reference number 117 of 18/01/18, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
