Celtic started 2018 in great fashion with a second half display that blew Lancaster away. The visitors did start well and took a 2-1 lead into the half time break. Mercer heading home in the twelfth minute from a set piece. Celtic couldn’t seem to get into any flow, but two minutes before half time Chapell bagged his first goal of a memorable afternoon with a sweet strike from the edge of the box. With almost the last kick of the half the visitors re took the lead through Bailey after a scramble in the box.

Celtic needed to find a spark and that they did. Bailey-Jones was brought on and Chapell was moved centrally behind striker Dickinson. An inspired move as Celtic dominated the half and Chapell ran the Lancaster defence ragged. With the rain battering down on the Bower Fold pitch conditions became extremely testing. Just before the hour mark Celtic leveled. Ashworth leaping to head home a corner. Celtic’s tails were up and they put Lancaster to the sword. Bailey-Jones causing all manner of problems cut inside from the left wing to tee up Chapell who hit a cracking effort that flew past Cheetham to give Celtic the lead. Chapell nearly claimed his hat trick after beating Cheetham in a one on one only to see the deteriorating conditions stop his shot on the goal line before being cleared to safety. He wasn’t to be deterred however and on seventy one minutes he did pick up his first career hat trick after sliding the ball past an on rushing keeper and sliding home. With ten minutes left Bailey-Jones completed the scoring after tapping in from close range. A simply outstanding second half display from Celtic, and a fantastic way to kick off the new year. One that the Celtic faithful will be hoping finally sees an upturn in their fortunes.
