Ashton look ahead to new season in Greater Manchester Cricket League
Monday 29th January 2018 @ 11:22 by Mark Phillip

Officials at Ashton CC are well on the way to preparing for the Club’s first season in the Greater Manchester Cricket League.

By the time the season comes around there will be a new look at Reyner Lane. In terms of playing facilities support from the England and Wales and Lancashire Cricket Boards together with Great Neighbourhoods has enabled the Club to install a three lane net facility and this will be complemented by an artificial strip on the square. Officials have been aware for some time that the 50 year old Clubhouse is in urgent need of upgrading and news came last week that Viridor Credits have awarded the Club a significant grant. This will enable extensive works to be undertaken to the Clubhouse.

Commenting on this news Club President David Mellor said “After a lot of thought in recent months the Committee were aware that if we are to provide the type of facilities which will allow us to achieve our objective a significant investment was required. The support we have had to enable improvement of our playing facilities and now to make our Clubhouse fit for purpose will now mean that we are able to ensure the continuity of cricket in the west end of Ashton”.

The schedule for the summer is now being firmed up. Ashton start the GMCL campaign with a home game against South West Manchester on April 21st and the cup draws which were announced on Sunday have been kind as well with three home draws. The 1st XI face old Pennine League opposition in Shaw on May 20gth; the 2nd XI welcome Edgworth to Reyner Lane for an early 1st Round game on April 29th and the 3rd XI face Winton on 13th May.

In order to meet the challenge of the GMCL the Club are looking to engage a player coach on a long term agreement. David stated: “We recognise that with the investment in facilities we also need to ensure that we are helping our players to develop. I’d like to encourage anybody interested in helping us put this in place to contact me on 07940 257820. We are holding regular weekly practice sessions at Total Cricket and would welcome any new players, in particular a wicketkeeper / batsman. One again anybody interested please contact me”
