The Hyde Rotary Club sleigh has raised almost £5,000 this year – their biggest ever total for their ‘Santa visits’ around the town.

The annual tradition, which is organised by the voluntary members of Hyde Rotary Club, raises thousands of pounds for local charities good causes – and this year was no exception, with £4,947.13 raised overall.

The Hyde Rotary Sleigh was kept extremely busy in the two-week countdown to Christmas with a packed itinerary of visits around the town’s streets with visits to the popular Christmas Artisan Market, businesses and schools too!

Father Christmas was greeted by excited children and adults on his route as he gave out Christmas cards and sweets from his sleigh.

He also visited Oakdale Special School in Dukinfield, The Union Street Senior Citizens Party, B&M Hyde, Tesco in Hattersley and the Hyde Christmas Light Switch On event.

After the visits, Rotary President Alan Oldham said: “We have moved up a gear this year with our publicity and it has certainly paid off, as more adults with their happy smiling children came out onto the streets, waiting for a glimpse of ‘the big man’ and eager to donate to our charity collections.”

“These annual visits would not be possible without the extra help we receive, and this year I would like to thank The Hyde Police Cadets, Newton Scouts and Cubs, Gee Cross Guides and Scouts, Paper Tulips of Hyde for sponsoring the Christmas Cards and ASDA, Morrison’s and, B&M of Hyde, for supplying the sweets.

“Last but not least a big thank you to the people of Hyde for their kind donations of money and tinned meats that will be used in the new year to support local charities.”
