Glossop North End endured another afternoon to forget as their promotion hopes took another massive blow after suffering a 4-1 defeat away to Clitheroe in their final game before Christmas.

The Hillmen started well at Shawbridge and took the lead in the 28th minute as on-loan Bolton left-back Ryan White marked his debut with a fine finish into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Jude Oyibo and Zeph Thomas both forced good saves from Clitheroe keeper Chris Thompson before the hosts levelled two minutes before the break when top scorer Kurt Willoughby with an arrowed shot across Elliot Wynne which nestled into the corner.

Clitheroe – who were beaten 2-0 at Surrey Street earlier in the season – turned the game on its head nine minutes into the second half when Ross Dent reacted quickest to a Willoughby shot that was saved to tuck in the rebound.

It was largely an end-to-end second half with chances at both ends but the Lancashire side made the game safe as Alexander Newby put them 3-1 up in the 85th minute before the impressive Willoughby bagged his 21st goal of the season two minutes later with a fine finish to add gloss to a sixth successive win for Simon Haworth’s side.

It was a third successive heavy defeat on the road for Glossop – whose previous two games were postponed – after previous back-to-back 5-1 defeats away at Colwyn Bay in the league and Workington in the FA Trophy.

Paul Phillips and Steve Halford’s team – who now have 27 points from 18 league games – slipped down to 10th in the Evo-Stik First Division North and are remain nine points adrift of the play-off places.

They will be hoping to finally get back to winning ways when Halford’s former club Mossley visit Surrey Street on Boxing Day for a 3pm kick-off.
