Droylsden 1-1 Goole

Droylsden’s playoff hopes took a slight knock on Saturday after the Bloods were held to a 1-1 draw against bottom club Goole.

The sides entered the fixture having endured contrasting fortunes this season. After a positive start to the campaign, Dave pace’s side are expected to make a charge on the playoffs come May, while Goole remain rooted to the foot of the table after being granted a reprieve over summer.

While the odds were stacked in Droylsden’s favour ahead of the tie, it was actually Goole who started off the brighter. Chances were few and far between for both sides in the opening half hour but Goole did take the lead in the 37th minute.

A dangerous low cross into the box was swept home with real conviction by the lurking Scott Smith.

Had it not been for the acrobatics of goalkeeper Richie Branagan, Droylsden would have been two goals down just minutes later.

However, Branagan’s heroics were rewarded on the stroke of half-time when Ciaran Kilheeney converted a spot kick after Sefton Gonzales was brought down.

The game opened up in the second-half with numerous chances created. Droylsden came closest after the restart through Gonzales, but the striker – who scored at Telford Utd the previous weekend – found his accuracy lacking.

Droylsden then had a penalty appeal turned away by the referee after Luke Daly was brought down inside the box, before Goole came close with a bullet header from close range.

Chances were at a premium from this point on and both sides had to settle for a point each.

Droylsden return to Evo-Stik First Division North action on Tuesday night when Ramsbottom United visit the Butchers Arms.
