A fundraising ‘first’ has raised a fantastic £1,800 for the male cancer charity Orchid.

The event, held at Mottram Cricket Club, proved a magnificent success and organisers Christine Deeley and Margaret Smith say they want to thank everyone involved.

Christine said: “It was such a fabulous turn-out – we were overwhelmed by people’s generosity and with the amount which we were able to raise.

“All the money will be donated to Orchid and will go towards further research into male cancers.”

As previously reported, Christine and Margaret’s campaign to raise more awareness of male cancers which includes prostate, testicular and penile cancers, is one which is close to their hearts.

Christine’s son-in-law, Christopher Dempster, sadly lost his life to cancer aged 34 and her nephew was also diagnosed and successfully treated for testicular cancer.

Christine said: “The event was not just about raising money, it was also about raising awareness of male cancers and encouraging more men to seek help earlier if they think there may be something wrong.

“We were happy to be able to host a stand from Orchid at the event to get these important messages heard.”

Plans are in the pipeline – the first fundraiser of its kind in the north west region, annually, while another fundraising event could be organised in the new year.

Orchid works to raise awareness of testicular, prostate and penile cancers. If you would like more information you can email Orchid at [email protected]/cancer.org.uk or telephone their helpline number 08088 020010.
