PROUD TO BE HERE: Tameside Radio’s Louise Croombes comperes at the Hyde Christmas Lights Switch On.

The crowds braved the cold, wet, sleet and snow for Hyde’s official Christmas lights switch on yesterday.

The day-long event had been four months in the planning with the Hyde Community Events team and partners joining forces to bring a spectacle of acts and entertainment to the town for everyone.

This year’s event coincided with the Christmas themed Artisan Market, bringing a full day of fun family entertainment featuring a variety acts performing throughout from a centrally located, high visibility stage area.

The entertainment all built to the official switch on with comedian Justin Moorhouse doing the honours.

IT’S MY TURN: Justin Moorhouse takes to the stage to officially switch on Hyde’s lights.

Afterwards the Events Team’s Kevin Maddox, who was entertainment manager, hailed the event ‘the best switch on in years’.

“If you performed I would sincerely like to thank you,” he said.

“We also launched the SAFFA song and I want to see it in the charts – it’s that good – it’s called ‘Christmas Wishes’ and you can purchase it on iTunes for just 78p.

“All the public feedback we received about the entertainment was really positive with words like ‘spectacular’, ‘brilliant’, ‘awesome’ – and for this I thank you.”

James O’Malley and Louise Croombes from Tameside Radio 103.6FM compered throughout the morning and afternoon respectively, Louise saying she was ‘really proud’ to help host the switch on in her home town.

While Tameside Radio’s Outside Broadcast team also reported live for the Your Tameside show.

As well as the entertainment, there was a huge raffle, fairground rides, hot street-food, Tweed’s licensed bar, a mouth-watering hog roast, and Santa’s Grotto situated in the inside market.

THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT: Shoppers could enjoy a host of acts while perusing the Christmas Artisan Market.

The Hyde Community Events Team, which comprise principally of volunteer members of Hyde Town Team & Hyde Town Council; namely Cllr Andy Kinsey, Clare Rowbottom, Joanne Rowbottom, Andrew Richardson, Karen Dorney, Cllr Betty Affleck and Hyde Rotary’s Kevin Maddox, worked tirelessly to deliver the new switch-on event.

They said: “We couldn’t be more pleased that this entire Christmas Lights programme has been so enthusiastically welcomed and supported by so many of the town’s retail community and also that Justin Moorhouse accepted the invitation from us to help get Christmas Switch-on party started in Hyde.

“The event was the biggest and best Christmas lights switch-on event we’ve had in the town for many years and to have such local support and a popular TV personality doing the honours was fantastic.”

Speaking on behalf of the Town Team, Julia Harrison added: “It was great to see so many organisations and local businesses come together to bring the Christmas lights switch-on event together.”
