Free carousel rides are among the many merry thrills in store as Tameside Christmas Market continues this weekend.

The event on Ashton’s Market Street got off to a flying start last weekend, with hundreds enjoying free rides on the helter skelter as well as shopping, entertainment and festive food and drink.

The Christmas market will continue to run for the next two weekends (December 1 to 3 and December 8 to 10), with attractions including free rides on the carousel this weekend and on the ferris wheel for the finale weekend.

Other highlights include over 20 traditional cabin stalls, selling handmade crafts and gifts, as well as delicious food and drinks and Santa’s Grotto, which raises money for local charities.

On Saturdays, there is a free Storytime with Santa from 10am to 10.30am while, on Sundays, there will be free donkey rides from 11am to 3pm.

New for this year will be opportunity to enjoy breakfast with Santa in a one-off event taking place this Sunday (December 3) from 10am to 10:45am. The cost is £5, which includes breakfast and a gift from Santa. With places limited, booking is essential and for tickets, visit

There will also be welcome elves and walkabout characters, which are presenting some great selfie and photo opportunities. Visitors can relax with refreshments in the heated marquee while enjoying music from local brass bands and singers, as well as performances from local dance schools.

Santa is in town: As usual, Father Christmas is one of the market’s main attractions

The event was officially opened last Friday by Tameside Mayor, Cllr Joyce Bowerman, who was joined by Father Christmas and the choir from Ashton’s Inspire Academy, who performed beautifully to visitors.

Cllr John Taylor, Tameside Council Executive Deputy Leader, who also attended the opening, said: “Tameside Christmas Market got off to a cracking start – we’ve already had some really positive feedback from visitors and traders.

“The Christmas market complements the many vibrant shops and market stalls already on offer, helping to attract more shoppers and boosting business while providing a fun family event for everyone across the borough and beyond. Come along and enjoy the festive atmosphere.”

The market will be open on Friday and Saturday between 10am and 9pm (some stalls may close at 7pm) and on Sunday between 10am and 4pm.
