Leading cardiologist and health campaigner Dr Aseem Malhotra returned home to Manchester to launch his revolutionary new book The Pioppi Diet.

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham joined him at the Arndale’s Waterstones store for the event, attended by dozens of invited guests including many from the medical profession in Tameside.

The book, already a best seller, is the fruit of several years of research which, as previously reported on these pages, initially led to the production of a documentary film released last year entitled ‘The Big Fat Fix’.

Dr Malhotra, who hails himself from Tameside, travelled to the tiny village of Pioppi in Italy to discover the revolutionary benefits of the Mediterranean Diet.

Pioppi is a tiny fishing village in the South of Italy where the average life expectancy is very nearly 90 years of age.

The documentary, and the book, explore the secrets to their longevity, focussing not only on diet but general well being, healthy living, movement and exercise.

Following Andy Burnham’s introduction praising Dr Malhotra’s research and discoveries, Dr Malhotra explained himself how his journey as a health campaigner had ultimately led to the production of the film and book.

He also explained how, if we all followed the lifestyle plan, that the effects for us individually would not only be dramatic – but they would also have a huge benefit for the NHS.

The cardiologist believes if we all adhered to the lifestyle he advocates, then within 12 months the NHS’ cash problems would be solved, with the lifestyle plan drastically reducing the risk of not only heart disease, but importantly Type-2 diabetes.

Following his talk there were many questions from a fascinated audience before Dr Malhotra signed copies of his book for everyone who wanted to buy one – the store staying open later than planned to accommodate the considerable interest the book and talk had generated.

The Pioppi Diet, which Dr Malhotra has co written with Donal O’Neill, provides a simple 21-day lifestyle plan that the authors say can transform your health forever.

The Pioppi Diet: A 21-Day Lifestyle Plan, published by Penguin is widely available in all good book stores and online now – including of course, Waterstones.
