Richie Wellens will take charge of Oldham Athletic on an interim basis following John Sheridan’s departure this morning (Monday).

Wellens, who has been working closely with the club as first team coach, will take training and be in charge of tomorrow’s game against Peterborough United.

He will be assisted by youth team manager Tony Philliskirk, goalkeeping coach Carlo Nash and fitness coach John Harbin.

Wellens said: “First of all, I’m gutted for John and Tommy. They are two people I’ve known for a long time and I have a lot of respect for both of them but it’s happened now and we have just got to get on with it.

“I will take things day by day and hopefully we can get the three points tomorrow.

“It’s about getting a smile back on the players faces, trying to get them to enjoy playing football and try and be positive in the way that we play.

“We need to start getting over the bad run that we are on and try climbing up the league.”

Oldham enter the game on the back of a 5-1 defeat at Rotherham on Saturday – the club’s seventh this season – while Peterborough sit second in the table following Saturday’s 3-2 victory over Wigan Athletic.
