Sports Tours Interntional has renewed its sponsorship of the Tameside Football League for the 2017/18 season.

Run by local businessman Chris Bird, Sports Tours International is one of the UK’s largest specialist sports travel companies, taking thousands of participants and spectators to sports events around the world, including the TCS New York City Marathon, L’Etape du Tour and Le Tour de France.

More locally, Sports Tours re-established the iconic Tour of Tameside running event which returned to the borough for a third consecutive year in June.

Growing from strength to strength, the company is also a keen supporter of other running events such as the ‘We Love Manchester 10k’ and the ‘City of Salford 10k’.

Tameside Football League Secretary, Graham Dixon, said he was delighted with the renewed sponsorship deal. Speaking to Reporter Sport, he said: ” The League is celebrating it’s 50th Anniversary this year and is delighted that Sports Tours International have continued with their invaluable sponsorship for the new season.

“This sponsorship will be used across many areas of the grassroots game with subsidies being offered to persons taking FA Referees courses, FA Coaching courses, Club Welfare courses, FA First Aid courses plus a number of new initiatives throughout the season all designed to encourage more volunteers to participate within the game.”

Kevin Harmer, UK Events and Sponsorship Manager, said: “Sports Tours International are delighted to again assist with the development of the Tameside Youth Football League.

“As we well know through the Tour of Tameside running event each June, togetherness via sport, activity and support is a crucially important vehicle in Tameside and we are really please that our sponsorship will help to support grass roots football, youth programmes, young leader training and much more.”

The League is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year after starting out as the Longendale League with only 10 teams many years ago. Today the League has some 200 teams spread throughout Junior and Open Age football with some 3500 players registered for the new season.
In light of this achievement, the League is holding an Anniversary Dinner on Thursday, November 9 at the Village Hotel in Ashton. Guest speaker is Manchester United legend, Dennis Irwin.
