An armed thief targeted a pregnant woman during an attempting robbery at a shop in Clayton.

At 2.45pm on Wednesday, August 30, police were called to reports of an armed robbery at a store on Clayton Street.

The robber entered the store at around 2:30pm before threatening the pregnant shop worker with a handgun and demanding money.

The offender proceeded to threaten two customers who were also in the shop, but the member of staff refused his demands and told him she was calling the police.

The man then fled empty handed in the direction of John Heywood Street and no-one was injured.

He has been described as white, wearing all black clothing including a hooded top and a grey face mask to conceal his identity.

Detective Constable John Armitage, from GMP’s City of Manchester borough, said: “This was a brazen attack and the shop worker showed tremendous bravery in standing up to the offender.

“Both the shop worker and customers feared for their safety and this is completely unacceptable. This could have had a very tragic outcome but thankfully no-one was injured.

“We have launched an investigation and want to reassure people that we will not tolerate members of our community being attacked in such a traumatic way when they are simply going about their daily business.

“If you saw anyone acting suspiciously or matching the description in the area at the time of the attack or have any information that could help our investigation then I would urge you to get in touch.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting incident number 1096 of 30/08/17 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
