Mossley set their own benchmark in Saturday’s season opener when coming from behind to record a stunning 5-2 victory at Kendal Town.

The Lilywhites were off to a flying start within two minutes. Liam Ellis had already gone close in the opening minute before Adam Latham and Caldon Henson combined on the right to feed Jack Tuohy who finished well with an angled drive.

Mossley were creating plenty of chances. Ellis had a shot brilliantly tipped over by Will Kitchen and Latham saw his powerful effort come back off the post.

Despite dominating the proceedings Mossley were pegged level on 33 minutes when a mistake by keeper Oliver Martin saw Connor Gaul’s right wing free kick slip through his fingers and over the line for a shock equaliser.

Worse followed five minutes before the break when Aaron Taylor’s shot found the Mossley net to give the homesters a surprise half time lead.

However, shaken not stirred, Mossley went on to dominate the second half. The equaliser took only five minutes to arrive. Ellis chased a seemingly lost cause to the dead ball line on the right wing and somehow got in a low cross that Jack Tuohy met at the near post to slot past Kitchen from a very narrow angle.

Mossley continued to force the issue and the visitors finally went ahead on 71 minutes when Tuohy unselfishly played Adam Latham into space and the Mossley winger made no mistake from ten yards.

The lead was stretched to 4-2 on 79 minutes with a superb solo effort by left back Sam Gibson. A mazy run saw Gibson pull off a brilliant ‘Maradona turn’ inside the box to totally bemuse the Kendal defence before slotting home an early ‘goal of the season’ contender.

The second half rout was completed in the 88th minute. Substitute Danny McLaughlin burst forward from half way and fed Mason Duffy who raced to the edge of the Kendal box before planting a firm shot beyond Kitchen’s reach to complete an emphatic 5-2 victory.
