Banned driver Leonard Hoy drove along Park Parade in Ashton while more than five times over the legal drink drive limit, Tameside magistrates heard.

The 41 year old, of Hurst Court, Ashton, pleaded guilty to the offence which happened on July 26 and was jailed immediately by magistrates for a total of 26 weeks.

Magistrates said the offence was so serious because of the high reading, stating it was ‘off the scale’ after hearing the defendant had been caught red handed and had a record for previous similar offending.

The court added it had a duty to protect the public.

He was found to have 187 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – the legal limit being 35 while behind the wheel of an MG ZR car.

Magistrates banned him from driving for five years.

He was ordered to pay a £115 victim surcharge.
