Football legend Sir Geoff Hurst MBE will be coming home to Ashton next week.

He will return to the place of his birth 75 years ago for a day of nostalgia, new babies and culminating in him becoming a Freeman of the Borough of Tameside.

Sir Geoff (pictured above) is travelling up from his home in Gloucestershire with his wife, Lady Judith, on Tuesday (July 25) when he will visit Tameside Hospital to open the new £600,000 antenatal unit.

After lunch at the hospital he will visit Hyde United FC to meet players and the management team and join in a game of walking football.

Sir Geoff is President of the Club, and as a former England international footballer he remains the only man to score a hat- trick in a World Cup final as England recorded a 4-2 victory over West Germany at the old Wembley in 1966.

Afterwards he will go on to Dukinfield Town Hall for afternoon tea with the Civic Mayor of Tameside, Cllr Joyce Bowerman and other civic dignitaries before being made an honorary Freeman of the Borough.

This is the highest award that the council can bestow and dates back to the Middle Ages.
