Surprise Special Recognition Award for Tameside Reporter and Radio

HUMBLED: Editor Nigel Skinner with the ‘Special Recognition Award’ at tonight’s Everyone Matters Tameside and Glossop NHS awards event

Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust held its Everyone Matters Awards 2017 at the Village Hotel in Ashton tonight.

The awards event recognises the hard work and dedication of health care professionals who have all gone above and beyond to deliver the best health care to the community in the area.

More than 300 people attended the glittering awards ceremony with some 250 people and teams entering for this year’s awards – with 11 categories and Lifetime Achievement Awards all being presented.

Special guests including local MPs Andrew Gwynne and Angela Rayner were among those to present the awards, plus Tameside Reporter Editor Nigel Skinner, who was honoured to present the ‘Brightest Star’ award, which went to Jodie Ball.

The night was hosted by Andy Crane and closed with a surprise ‘Special Recognition Award’ presented by Trust Chief Executive Karen James to Nigel.

The award was to recognise the support from the entire Tameside Reporter, Glossop Chronicle and Tameside Radio team for helping report on – and raise funds for – the £1.8m Tameside Macmillan Cancer Unit appeal.

The communication group’s ‘Bring a pound day’ raised more than £7,000 for the unit back in February, with the unit itself opening at Tameside Hospital earlier this year.

Accepting the award a stunned Nigel said he was totally speechless, but thanked Karen for the award on behalf of everyone at the newspaper and radio who had been proud to support the Macmillan campaign – plus all generous members of the community who had contributed to our ‘Bring a pound day.’

Nigel told a packed venue that his own managing director was one of the very first customers to use the unit, while his own wife Denise had suffered from breast cancer, which had made the newspaper and radio campaign an especially personal one for everyone involved.
