Ashton Town Council hosts ‘Amazing Ashton’ this Saturday (July 22).

Community groups from across the town will be joining forces to celebrate together, showcase what they do and mark the diversity and heritage of the town.

Months of planning have gone into creating the fun day for residents, visitors and shoppers alike as a diverse range of groups and community organisations reveal what they have to offer.

At the Town Council’s first meeting earlier this year, the council underlined their commitment to bring communities together and it’s hoped this event will be a fitting celebration.

Chair of Ashton Town Council, Cllr Mike Glover, said: “We recognise the importance that many of the voluntary and community groups play in our area so we unanimously agreed that our first event should celebrate that.”

“The town council members are delighted to work with Tameside Markets, Ashton Town Team, Lady-
smith Shopping Centre, Arcades and FAB Events to create what we hope will become an annual event for the town centre.”

Sue Carrigan from Neonatal Knitters, one of the groups attending the event, added: “Neonatal Knitters are really excited to be involved in the very first ‘Amazing Ashton’ event in our town centre.

“We are such a diverse community here in Ashton and there is so much going on that this event is a brilliant way to showcase our many talents, our fantastic community spirit and to make new friends throughout Ashton.”

Feel the force: Darth Vader from Star Wars will be among the visitors at Saturday’s event

The big event begins at 11am on Saturday.

A performance stage will be located at the front of Ashton Market Hall on Saturday featuring entertainment from All My Ghosts, Blaze Dance, Do Your Thing, Doherty Irish Dancers, Tameside Rock Choir and a demonstration from Sitsiam Martial Arts.

Stalls will also be placed around the town centre promoting groups like Tameside Scouts, Tameside Air Cadets, Action Together, Anthony Seddon, New Life Church, Waterloo Centre and Neonatal Knitters.

Town centre shops are also invited to join in an ‘Amazing Window’ competition where the best dressed will be judged by members of the Town Council and Civic Mayor, Councillor Joyce Bowerman, in the
afternoon.

There will also be incredible characters supplied by Hyde Fundraisers ranging from Disney, Dr Who,
Star Wars, Planet Of The Apes along with Wallace & Gromit.

The characters will make regular appearances throughout the day to provide some excellent photo opportunities.

The Black Knight will also be part of the fun with Lady Ashton, so watch out for him during the day around the town.
