The family and friends of late Denton teenager Elliott Fernandez are keeping his memory alive through a trust set up in his name.

Elliott, 19, died in January from alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form cancer and now his loved ones are determined to raise awareness of the disease and help fund specialist nurses to increase early diagnosis.

Elliott’s family and his closest friends have formed ‘Elliott’s Trust’ and have raised over £40,000 in just six months. “We’d already arranged a big fundraiser before Elliott passed away so we decided to go ahead with that,” his mum Beverley explained. “It was really, really hard because it was only five days afterwards, it was quite emotional.

“Since then, we’ve bag packed at Morrisons in Denton twice, then we did another one in Hyde and ASDA a couple of weeks ago. Elliott’s school, Hyde Community College, have been amazing. They’ve raised a lot of money for him and the trust with the market stall that they had. Everybody has been amazing; the community in Hyde is just something else.”

Elliott’s Trust are preparing for their marquee event coming up in October, a Dragonfly Ball at the Etihad Stadium, in memory of the former Manchester City ball boy. Popular swing singer Glen Roughead will be performing with the Paul James Swing Band while Nick Newbould will be the host on the evening. There’ll also be a DJ, auction, raffle, photo booth, glitter art and a magician. There may even be a surprise guest or two on the night.

Beverley said: “The ball is the whammy. We wanted to try and make this an annual event eventually so we’ve got to hit it big with this first one. We’ve booked Glen Roughead who is very well known on the circuit; he’s played for Pep Guardiola and for the Rooney’s at their party. People are donating prizes for auction for us and the raffle.”

The black tie event gets underway at 7.30pm on Saturday 7th October, at the Legends Suite, Etihad Stadium. Tickets are £70 which includes welcome drinks and a three course meal. For more details and to book your tickets, you can e-mail [email protected] or call 07849 950341.
