The Summer of Love, Radio 1 and Clarendon Square Shopping Centre – what link does this unlikely trio share? 50th anniversaries, for which the latter will be hosting its fun-packed ‘Hyde Hop’ birthday event this weekend.

The two-day birthday bash on Saturday (July 22) and Sunday (July 23) from 11am to 4pm will see the centre marking its golden anniversary, with face-painting, crafts competitions, giveaways and games galore.

Paula Wood, centre manager at Clarendon Square, said: “The centre is half a century this month and we’re putting on a family-focused event for all generations to come together and celebrate this amazing milestone with us.”

Retailers at the centre including O2, Greenhalgh Bakers, the British Heart Foundation and Hot Food Kitchen will be making sure visitors have an unforgettable day out, with fancy dress being worn by many.

The team at phone provider, 02 will be decorating the store, and themselves, in a Summer of Love theme to host ‘Hydestock’ – a virtual reality experience in collaboration with Samsung Galaxy where visitors will be immersed in throwback entertainment, music and flower power fun from the sixties.

Greenhalgh Bakers – which is also celebrating its own spectacular 60 years in business this year – will be making a giant ‘Hyde Hop’ cake for customers to get stuck into, as well as samples of other delicious treats.

The British Heart Foundation will have a tombola stall outside its store, to raise money and awareness about heart disease.

Hot Food Kitchen – also known as Oven King to locals – has been at the centre since its doors opened and is set to get into the groove with something special for visitors during the event.

The birthday activities will be taking place at three locations around the centre, which will be decorated with bunting and special family photos taken at the centre over the years.

The main activity area will be on the mall next to Mocha Joe’s for cakes, fundraising, giant games and a craft area complete with face painting. There will be more games at Rutherford Way, as well as roaming balloon modelling and face-painting outside the market hall.

Paula has attributed the success of the centre to the people in the local area.

“Clarendon Square has been heavily invested in over the last five decades and to this day it remains a huge asset to the town,” she added.

“Many people will have come here as children when we first opened and still shop with us, but now with their own families and grandkids in tow. The community has made the centre a brilliant retail destination filled with so many great memories.

“We’re thrilled to be 50 years young and would like to thank locals and visitors for playing a crucial role in us reaching this wonderful milestone. It’s going to be an incredibly fun party and we hope Hyde will be out in full force to enjoy this momentous occasion.”

Clarendon Square’s ‘Hyde Hop’ 50th birthday celebrations take place at various locations across the centre from 11am to 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
