Pupils from Dowson Primary School are just champion!

The youngsters were one of ten schools from the Hyde area to take part in a Kwik Cricket Tournament held at Total Cricket in Ashton last week.

The event took place across two days and was organised by a number of different parties, including New Charter, Tameside Council and the Police.

After some spectacular team performances, Dowson were crowned champions and were followed by Hollingworth in second.

Following the tournament, Mamun Aziz, neighbourhood coordinator at New Charter, said: “The tournament has been running for seven or eight years now.

“It’s a fantastic event that’s aimed at primary schools based in the Hyde and Hattersley area.

“This year we had ten teams competing against each other across two days.”

Although ten schools took part in the first day of the competition, only eight would qualify for the knockout stages.

Having been impressive throughout the event, Dowson progressed to the final and edged their way to glory. Mamun said: “Dowson played fantastic over both days and there were only 15 runs between them and Hollingworth.

“The whole tournament has gone really well and all the kids and teachers have really enjoyed themselves.”

Mamun thanked the various parties who had made the event possible and also looked ahead to next year. “It wouldn’t be possible without the help of Total Cricket, Morrisons, and H&T Secondhand Jewellery” said Mamun.

“The police, New Charter and Tameside Council have all helped put this event on, and it’s been an overwhelming success.

“I’m really pleased with how it’s gone.

“We’ll be holding the same event next year, although we’re hoping to hold it at Flowery Field Cricket Club.

“We’ll use Total Cricket as a back-up, in case the weather’s bad.”
