Long serving Hyde Rotarian Kevin Maddox has been awarded a Paul Harris Sapphire Pin in a surprise presentation – one of the very highest honours in Rotary.

It is only the fourth time in the club’s 80 year history that the award has been given.

An emotional and surprised Kevin received the honour for his hard work and dedication as president of Hyde Rotary over the past 12 months.

“It was a huge surprise – really unexpected,” said Kevin.

He received the award at the installation of the group’s new President Alan Oldham during a ceremony held at Hyde’s Oaklands Hall last night.

Vicky Gaunt was named vice president.

Dr Vik Tanna gave a vote of thanks to Kevin, explaining what a very busy and successful fundraising year he had led for Hyde Rotary, which included organising the ever popular Rotary Christmas sleigh for more days than ever before.

He then paid tribute to Kevin, who had stepped into the President’s shoes for the second time, helping the club to turn a corner at a difficult time and ultimately increasing membership when he himself was battling serious illness.

Some 60 attendees including visiting Rotary members from other local clubs plus invited guests enjoyed a sumptuous three course meal at The Oaklands.

In his address Alan pledged to continue Kevin’s hugely successful year. He did not have one chosen charity this coming year, but was looking to help a number of different, smaller charities over the course of the next 12 months.

Hyde Rotary’s next big event is this Sunday – when it stages the Gee Cross Fete in association with Willow Wood Hospice.
