Denton’s first team lost narrowly by 2 wickets at Sretford CC on Saturday after a stirring fightback.

Batting first, Denton, led by stand in skipper Buitendag, lost wickets at regular intervals under pressure from the home side’s overseas star Rankine. Fightbacks were led by Buitendag, Hayes and Andrew who all got into the 20’s, with Denton all out for 136, Rankine finishing with 6-55.

In reply the home side made a strong start led by 46 from A Holmes. The introduction of double spin into the Denton attack almost turned the game on its head, with Buitendag taking 5-29 and Taylor 2-46, however the accumulation of 40 extras throughout the innings proved the difference between the 2 teams and Armstrong was able to finish the innings off for the home team.

At Egerton Street, the 2nd team got their season off to a good start with a win at home to Friends Sporting Club. The visitors batted first and were going at a steady pace until Lorance came in to bat at 7 and smashed 67 off 27 balls, taking the score up to 205-7 from their 45 overs. In reply, partnerships were key to the chase for Denton, with 4 partnerships over 30 and only 1 of the 9 batsmen used scoring less than 15, as the score was chased down with an over to spare. Mather MVP with 4-45 and 58 with the bat.
