Thousands of people are being invited to put their best foot forward by taking part in this year’s walking festival, which starts today (Monday).

Transport for Greater Manchester (TFGM) have organised around 300 free guided walks across the region.

There will be walks of various distances for people of all ages, abilities and interests through towns, along canals and riversides and up hills and moors.

Those taking place throughout Tameside are being co-ordinated by Active Tameside, Tameside Health Walks and Tameside Ramblers with walks planned in all towns.

The third ever walking festival takes place throughout May and is being supported by a number of councils, including Tameside Council.

The scheme is being carried out mainly by volunteers, with walking groups in the 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester delivering walks to encourage people to venture into the great outdoors.

Regular walking has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, a stroke and some cancers.
