Droylsden 164 all out (49.4 overs)

Thornham 138-8 (50 overs)

Droylsden won by 26 runs

Droylsden visited Thornham on Saturday in a clash between the league’s top 2 sides, both boasting 100% records from their first 3 league fixtures. Visiting captain Uppal won the toss and chose to bat first, and Schofield and Cicchirillo soon set about putting the home bowlers to task, sharing a 75 runs opening stand before Cicchirillo played on for 25. Schofield continued and reached 70 before he succumbed to a change of pace, and although Shirley and Cheema scored hastily, the innings petered out as Droylsden limped to 164 all out.

Early wickets were the order of the day, and opening pair Nistico and Cheema duly obliged. Some middle order resistance from Thornham threatened to dent Droylsden’s perfect start to the season but the introduction of Jones (15-6-25-2) and Uppal (15-3-41-2) stemmed the flow of runs and they took vital wickets. After starring with the bat earlier, Schofield took two late order wickets (2-14) and by the time Nistico bowled the last over, the hosts needed an improbable 27 runs to win. Five dots follow and a single followed and Droylsden were the victors, maintaining their 100% start to the season.

Droylsden’s second team were comprehensive winners against Friends Sporting Club on Saturday at Oakfield. The visitors were dismissed for 110 with Jamie Walker taking 7-24. Droylsden made quick work of the reply, racing to 113/1 inside 14 overs, Paul Phillips 51* and Arslan Sabir 43*.

This weekend sees Droylsden host 4th placed Astley & Tyldesley on Saturday and 7th placed South West Manchester on Sunday. Both matches start at 1pm.
