Tuesday 2nd May 2017 @ 10:31 by Mark Phillip

Ashton Lacrosse Club 1st team were featured at the pinnacle event of the lacrosse season, The Flags Festival weekend, on Saturday, April 22 – an event which was the culmination of their efforts all season.

They faced Newcastle upon Tyne Lacrosse Club in the final of the David Beesley Cup at Rochdale Cricket and Lacrosse Club.

Both teams were very evenly matched from the beginning of the match. A great solo effort from Jack Beech opened the scoring for Ashton. The first quarter was hard fought, with Ashton in the lead at the end of the quarter 2-1 up.

Newcastle improved their game over the next 2 quarters and took the lead. Ashton struggled defensively and at the face off to regain possession – but only a goal separated the teams at the end of the 3rd quarter, with Newcastle ahead 6-7.

The end of the 3rd quarter was the tipping point for the game, it felt like either team could win it. Ashton needed to dig deep and play a fantastic game of lacrosse in final quarter if they were going to upset the Newcastle side and take the win.  A big push for Ashton saw them score 5 goals in the final quarter which sealed the victory at 11-8 and won them the David Beesley Cup in a very exciting and enjoyable game of lacrosse

The MVP of the day was David Schofield, with some great goals and efforts from Jimmy Newall but the whole of the Ashton team deserve credit for there efforts and great result.
