Manchester Road Mossley where a “confused” robber injured a pensioner while attempting to snatch her handbag.

Witnesses to a violent robbery attempt that put a Mossley pensioner in hospital in March, have now come forward with  information that may help snare the vicious thief.

The two witnesses have provided a description of the  man who they say appeared ‘confused’ when making his get away.

The thief ran first in one direction, then back tracked, before running away again in the same direction.

The robber is described as a white male 20 to 30 years of age, six feet tall with blond or blondish hair, but with a tanned complexion and possibly Eastern European in his appearance.

He was wearing a checkered top, jeans and shoes.

During the attack the 70-year-old woman was dragged to the floor and then pulled along the ground by the robber, as she refused to let go of her bag.

The feisty pensioner was taken to hospital with several cuts, scrapes and bruises and police have revealed that the woman’s condition became critical whilst in hospital after she “took a turn for the worst.’

The woman was only released from hospital after several weeks care.

Witnesses described how the robber seemed ‘confused’ by running some distance up the road and then stopping, looking around and then running back past his prostrate victim.

He then stopped again, before eventually running back up the road and joining the Huddersfield Canal tow path and making good  his escape along that route in the direction of Uppermill.

It could be that he had an accomplice in  a car with whom he was planning to make his getaway or the thief could simply have been lost.

Whatever the reason for the robber’s bizarre getaway movements police would like to hear from motorists who were passing around the time of the incident.

Police believe that at least one motorist may have dash cam evidence to the attempted robbery..

The attack happened close to the Chutney Massala restaurant on Manchester Road, Mossley, at 10.30 pm on Friday 3/3/17.
