A series of events are taking place across Tameside as part of a week of action to combat loan sharks.

The England Illegal Money Lending Team (IMLT) are working with Cash Box Credit Union and Tameside Council to raise awareness of the dangers of getting involved with a loan shark and to make residents aware of the legal alternatives available.

The events have been funded by IMLT using proceeds of crime money from convicted loan sharks.

Tameside Councillor Frank Travis, Chair of Cash Box Credit Union, said: “We at Cash Box Credit Union are really pleased to support the IMLT campaign against loan sharks.”

Agencies were at the Church of Nazarene in Ashton yesterday (Wednesday) for a grand unveil of the ‘Stop Loan Sharks’ community sofa where residents could speak to staff from Cash Box Credit Union about the benefits of opening a savings account.

A permanent ‘Stop Loan Sharks’ mosaic was unveiled last week by The Civic Mayor of Tameside, Cllr Philip Fitzpatrick, at Hattersley Tesco Extra.

The art was designed by Hattersley residents and local community groups in Tameside:
African Women’s Group, Hattersley Community Garden, Mancunian Reunion and Zest.

Today and tomorrow information stands will be set up to offer residents further advice and information about illegal money lending.

Staff from Tameside Council will be available at the following locations:

  • Today (Thursday) 10.30am to 3pm – Ashton Market Hall, Market Street
  • Tomorrow (Friday) 10.30am to 3pm – ASDA Ashton, Cavendish Street
