Alex Graver of New Mills Tennis Club won the Mel Harrop Memorial Open Tennis Tournament at Glossop Pyegrove for the seventh year in a row on Saturday, April 8.

In near perfect conditions with wall to wall sunshine (and reputedly hotter than Calcutta), sixteen players from Glossop and local clubs New Mills and Rosehill competed for the coveted trophy.

Dominic O’Hara, who is currently working for the Lawn Tennis Association in London, had a tough three-set battle in the semi-final against Chris Morton of New Mills. Alex Graver won his semi-final in two sets against Glossop’s Head Coach, Mark Beaver.

The final was perhaps less hotly contested than may have been the case, as unfortunately Dominic was carrying an injury by the time the final arrived. However, Alex Graver was a worthy winner once again in two sets and holds on to the trophy for another year.
