In action: John performing in the band in 1983

John, 55, who lived in Dukinfield, passed away peacefully in his sleep following a ‘short illness’, the band’s former frontman Mark Burgess announced last week.

The Middleton-based band formed in 1981 with John (pictured above), previously of The Politicians, joining shortly after.

The Chameleons had a massive cult following, releasing three albums.

They split in 1987 but reformed, in 2000, before embarking on a mammoth tour of the UK, Europe and the US.

The band released three further albums, before calling it a day in 2003.
