Ashton United have confirmed the signing of defender Simon Woodford ahead of today’s trip to Coalville Town.

Woodford previously played for Curzon Ashton, before moving to Glossop North End for a brief stint this season.

An experienced centre back, Woodford became a fans’ favourite at the Tameside Stadium after scoring the winning goal in the Evo-Stik Premier Division play-off final against Ilkeston in 2015 – a goal that promoted Curzon to the National League North.

As for today’s fixture, Ashton travel to Coalville Town on the back of two consecutive league defeats.

Jody Banim and Will Haining’s side were beaten 4-1 at Stourbridge on Monday 6 February, before falling to the same score at Barwell last weekend.

However, they made amends on Tuesday evening by progressing to the fourth round of the Doodson League Cup with a 3-2 win over Farsley Celtic.

While reaching the playoffs is a big ask this season – The Robins’ are currently 11 points adrift of fifth spot – embarking on a decent run could potentially give them a glimmer of hope.

In other news, defender Max Cartwright has joined on loan from Stockport County, while defender Joe Connor has left the club to sign for Evo-Stik Division One North club Droylsden.
