Ashton travelled to second placed Bolton, but with less than six minutes on the clock were 3-0 behind following a sin binning for a high tackle 25m out.

Ashton couldn’t get into the game and Bolton added a try and second penalty to lead 11-0 at HT.

Hopes that things could be turned around soon dimmed after a second Bolton try extended the lead to 16-0. With 15 minutes to go and with a Bolton player in the bin Ashton capitalised with some good rucking setting up captain Josh Fish for a well taken try converted by Alex Meredith.

Joe Worthington had been well closed down all game but a quick ball found him in space and he darted for the line to make it 16-12.

Ashton were dominant and took the ball upfield and following a couple of good drives prop forward James Bower picked up from the base of a ruck 40m out, spotted the cover defence drifting and cut back inside and romped home untouched to dot down by the posts. Meredith converted for 16-19 to Ashton .

Ashton absorbed massive pressure for the last two minutes with Bolton camped in their 22 but the defence held firm for a most incredible and joyous victory .

Second placed Ashton are at home to table toppers Crewe and Nantwich next Sunday 2pm k/o.
