Glossop North End bounced back from a disappointing derby defeat with a confident 3-1 victory over lowly Prescot Cables in the Evo-Stik First Division North last Saturday.

The Hillmen, who began the New Year with a 2-1 loss at Hyde United, were 2-0 up at the break after goals from strikers Mike Norton and Jamie Rainford.

Top scorer Rainford, who recently returned from a three-game suspension, made the game safe by adding a third in the second half before a consolation from Prescot’s Dominic Marie.

The win in Glossop’s first home game of 2017 took Chris Willcock’s side up to fourth in the table and to within four points of leaders Lancaster City.

The hosts made a positive start as an Adam Jones header across goal caused panic but Prescot keeper Marcus Burgess got his fingertips to the ball to divert it away from onrushing players.

At the other end, the visitors from Merseyside, third from bottom in the table, threatened as Glossop keeper Matt Cooper was forced to parry a low shot from James Edgar.

But Glossop took the lead in the 25th minute when Norton met a curling cross from Max Leonard to score his fifth goal in as many games.

Despite losing Jones and Eddie Moran to injuries, the hosts established a firm foothold and deservedly increased their lead two minutes before half-time when Rainford benefitted from excellent build-up play by Ben Richardson to find the net with an accomplished finish.

It got better for the Hillmen after the break when Norton beat Burgess to Paul Dugdale’s long-distance pass and fed Rainford, who tapped home from 20 yards into an empty net for his fifth goal in the last four matches against Cables.

Prescot did manage to register on the scoresheet as Marie bundled in Harry Cain’s centre from close range to pull a goal back in the 71st minute.

As the mist rolled in at Surrey Street, Rainford had a shot well blocked and Norton headed over late on but the Hillmen had already comfortably sealed a third successive home victory.

Meanwhile, Glossop’s Derbyshire Cup tie at home to Gresley – which was due to be played on Tuesday evening – was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch after a morning pitch inspection took place.

But the Hillmen’s league game against promotion rivals Trafford, which was postponed during the festive period, has been rearranged for Tuesday, February 7, with kick-off at 7:45pm at Shawe View.
