Fire -fighters of the Rescue Response Unit based at Ashton in training to extract a motorist by using cutting gear.

A Salford worker trapped under a mechanical digger has specialists from the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, based at Ashton to thank for extracting him from the machine.

The Rescue Response Unit from Ashton were called to an incident at The Crescent, Salford earlier this morning at around 8.00am to release the man who had become trapped after the digger fell 15 feet down an embankment.

It is believed the man alighted the digger which then slid down the embankment trapping him by the leg.

The rescue team used specialist equipment to successfully release the casualty  within 45 minutes and then left him in the care of the ambulance service.

Sadly the man did not escape unhurt and a Greater Manchester Police spokesman described his injuries as “not life-threatening, but could be life-changing.”
