Colts League D
Northwich Senior Colts 15-24 Ashton SC

Ashton traveled a man down with 14 players but were in good Christmas spirits and served up a feast of rugby for a lively crowd of around 100 .

Liam Riley returned to the team and it took just 2 minutes for him to get on the score sheet with a try from a huge miss pass from Alex Meredith and a 0-5 lead.

Northwich like to pick and drive and were very successful at it scoring two tries and a third from a unopposed No 8 pick up to lead 15-5 at the break.

Ashtons penalty count was too high but this was corrected in the second half and with Meredith and Riley swapping positions the second half would see a brilliant comeback.

Joe Worthington was a marked man, with the home team well aware of his pace, he put on the afterburners for a try out wide and a second one 10 minutes later also saw him outpace the defence in devastating fashion for a try under the posts which Meredith converted for a lead of 15-17.

Northwich rallied but Ashton stood firm defensively.

Riley at stand off was keeping the home team guessing, a neat league style grubber nearly came off. Moments later he used neat footwork and explosive pace to score a suburb try under the posts and Meredith’s conversion extended the lead to 15-24, a result that leaves Ashton a win off the top with a game in hand on Crewe and all to play for in the new year.
