More than £1,800 has been donated to local good causes at the recent Stalybridge Festival Committee Christmas event and presentation night.

The money was raised from the carnival parade street collection back in June, and some of the profits from the event itself.

By far the biggest donation of £1,000 was given to Hope for Paediatric Epilepsy, a group of volunteers looking after youngsters in the Tameside area.

This was raised separately by the three Festival Queens over the year, who chose the charity, raising the money through a regular tombola at the Stalybridge Artisan Market, raffles and online photo competitions.

Queens organiser Joyce Hobson said: “We are delighted what the girls have achieved over the year, which was extra to their carnival commitments.

“We must thank them and their dedicated parents for such a fantastic effort.”

Other groups which received donations on the night were Tameside, Oldham & Glossop MIND, Stalybridge Celtic Football In The Community, Rising Moon Motor Cycle Club, and the Stalybridge Town Team received a donation towards the Christmas lights.
