Ryecroft Hall’s Christmas Day gesture for lonely people

A community centre in Audenshaw is embracing the season of goodwill by holding a free party for more than 40 lonely people on Christmas Day.

Ryecroft Hall will open their doors on the big day to 44 people – most of which are elderly – for a three-course meal and a sing-song.

They will also be transported to and from the centre, opposite Audenshaw tram stop on Manchester Road, by taxis already paid for by the Ryecroft Hall Community Association.

Bob Partridge, who has been part of the association for almost 25 years and spends four or five days a week volunteering at the hall, told the Reporter: “We initially had 30 people last week and were looking for 40 but we are now four over so we have done alright.

“They will be picked up by taxi, come in and have a sing-a-long, pull a cracker, have a three-course meal, have another sing-a-long, they will get some presents and a goody bag before being dropped off again in taxis which we are paying for.”

Bob’s wife Pauline, a fellow member, added: “Many older people don’t have the confidence or indeed the family – some will just sit in on their own in flats but everyone should be with someone every day, especially on Christmas day.”

The hall’s association currently has 600 members but they are looking for more – with a yearly membership only £5, which includes entrance to the Christmas party.

The hall – which is open every day – also offers activities which include everything from line dancing and art to Zumba.

The café is open from Monday to Thursday and serves afternoon tea for £3.50 on Wednesday afternoons.

Bob added: “It’s very sociable. You can come in any day and enjoy a really nice meal for only £2 or £3 including a cup of tea. It’s dirt cheap as people, particularly older people, haven’t got the money to keep paying out.

The committee are also holding a Christmas Party next Friday (December 16) which everyone is welcome to attend at Ryecroft Hall, opposite Audenshaw tram stop.

It starts at 7pm and tickets are £6, including a hot pot supper, but people intending to go are kindly asked to give Pauline or Bob a call on 0161 330 7725.

They would like to thank Carillion, Aldi Supermarket in Clayton, Tesco Supermarket in Droylsden, Iceland in Ashton, Stamford Cars in Ashton, Hastings Cars in Clayton, Angela Wild, Ryecroft Hall Management Committee, Audenshaw Councillors and all the volunteers who are helping on Christmas Day.
