Drivers needed to go the extra mile for Tameside community

Volunteer drivers are needed in Tameside to go that extra mile to help vulnerable and isolated members of the community get to their health appointments.

So far this year, 25 drivers have taken 1,925 passengers to over 10,000 appointments – covering a staggering 75,000 miles in total – as part of Action Together Tameside’s Miles of Smiles community transport scheme.

But more people are needed to join the small, friendly team to help continue to provide the service for those who would otherwise struggle to access health care and services.

Volunteers use their own cars to take people to and from health and wellbeing appointments and provide a friendly and supportive service to members, ensuring they arrive safely, offering support to find the right building and other assistance where necessary.

Drivers are reimbursed to cover running costs, while Action Together Tameside also has a van for volunteers who don’t have their own cars.

Volunteers – who need to have friendly manner, open mind and enjoy a good chat – receive training, support and expenses.

Miles of Smiles, which is unique to Tameside, was started to meet the gap in services for patients that are ineligible for the ambulance service but who have difficulty in using public transport.

For a small charge to meet car running costs, members receive a door-to-door service, ensuring they arrive on time for approintments with minimum stress and anxiety.
