St John Ambulance in Denton has celebrated a century of first aid in the community.

The Civic Mayor of Tameside, Councillor Philip Fitzpatrick, joined volunteers at the group to mark the milestone.

St John held a day of free first aid demonstrations with residents encouraged to drop in to the William Stewart Building on Taylor Lane to pick up life-saving first aid tips.

There were various demonstrations and volunteers talked about opportunities with the charity, how to get involved and what sort of events they attend to provide first aid. For young visitors, the charity’s furry mascot, Bertie Badger was on hand.

Brian Bamber, Unit Manager for St John Ambulance, said: “Our Denton Unit has a proud history of caring for people and continues to provide first aid cover at dozens of local events throughout the year.

“Since the unit began, 100 years ago, our volunteers must have treated many thousands of patients; everything from sticking plasters on grazed knees to saving lives. First aid is a basic life skill that can have a massive impact on the lives of those who need it.”
