Two Ashton residents detained a man they saw trying to break into vehicles in Hurst and kept him until the police arrived to arrest him.

At just after 1:10 on Sunday morning, police received reports of a suspicious male seen on St Albans Avenue and just six minutes later they received another call that a man had been caught by two residents trying to enter vehicles in the area.

An officer arrived and arrested 44-year-old Mohammed Chaudry who has subsequently been charged with vehicle interference. He has been bailed to appear at Tameside Magistrates Court.

A GMP Tameside North Facebook post said: “We would like to thank the residents who swiftly contacted us to report this male acting suspiciously and the two residents who detained the him until police arrived.

“This shows the power of the police and local communities working together to help deter criminals from committing crime in the area.”
