Tintwistle Athletic’s 1st team made it through to the last 16 of the Rhodes Cup on Saturday with a 4-1 win at home to Didsbury.

Athletic looked the more dangerous side early on, but were unable to get an early breakthrough.

It took until the half-hour mark before the game came to life as the home side eventually took the lead. A perfectly weighted through ball from Jonny Higgins found Tom Burns, who comfortably slotted past the keeper.

Didsbury though could have equalised moments later had it not been for a fine save from Ant Rodrigues to deflect the ball onto the crossbar.

Tintwistle looked much more assured second half, controlling the possession and looking threatening with every attack.

So, it came as a surprise when Didsbury equalised against the run of play, with a calm finish from their striker. Athletic regained the lead soon after though, as the ball came out to Chris Rathburn on the edge of the box, who then found the bottom corner.

Didsbury pushed men forward as they looked to get back on level terms, however, this left much more space for Tintwistle going forward. Athletic killed the game off late on with two goals from Brad Brokenbrow to make it 4-1.

Tintwistle Athletic Reserves are also through to the quarter finals of the Whitehead cup beating AFC Oldham Reserves 8-1. The goals came from Sam Swann (3), Tom Bright (2), Ant Haywood (2) and Loz Szemberski (1).

Meanwhile, Tintwistle Athletic 3rds won 4-3 against Staly Lions reserves.

U-11 Blues were dominant throughout, as teamwork, strength and skill led to hat-tricks from Jack M and Oscar. Oscar and Frankie were the players of the match.

The Under-11s Blacks put in a tremendous performance, with excellent teamwork leading to goals from James 4, Matteo 3 and Iñigo 2. James and Robert both shared the man of the match award.
