People with complex needs will be able to dine in comfort at a new café in Denton.

The Olive Cafe, at Carmel Christian Centre, is open to everybody but comes complete with a fully accessible toilet with a hoist and changing bed, making it easier for individuals who are non-mobile or have complex needs.

For now, the café, on Seymour Street, will be open just one day a week, with plans to extend services in the New Year.

Linda Thomas, of the Carmel Christian Centre, said: “The Olive Café is open for all the community to use, including the groups that use the building already.

“We’ve got a baby sensory group and other groups that use the building throughout the week.

“On a Wednesday it’s going to be open 9.30am-2.30pm and after Christmas we’re hoping it will be open a few days more.

“We’ve got a great team of volunteers who are ready to serve the community with the best coffee and food in Tameside!”

The grand opening of the cafe was the second celebration in recent weeks after the Centre’s STARS group celebrated the installation of new facilities last month.

The fully-accessible toilet facility with a changing bed and hoist was installed last month and means the group, for families with children who are non-mobile and have complex disabilities, have all their needs catered for.

Sue Kelly, a STARS member said: “Even though we come on a Saturday to have fun time together with children who have complex physical needs, it means we can come to the café on a Wednesday as well because it has the facilities for our children.

“For anyone who requires those kind of facilities, it’s a great place to come and have lunch and have time together.

“These facilities are unique for a church anywhere in the country and unique in Tameside too.

“It also means that families with disabilities can come to the activities and extra events we put on throughout the year because we’ve got the facilities they need.”
